Problem

A particle PP of mass mm slides on a smooth horizontal table. PP is connected to a second particle QQ of mass MM by a light inextensible string which passes through a small smooth hole OO in the table, so that QQ hangs below the table while PP moves on top. Investigate motions of this system in which QQ remains at rest vertically below OO, while PP describes a circle with centre OO and radius bb. Show that this is possible provided that PP moves with constant speed uu, where u2=Mgb/mu^2 = Mgb/m.
