Problem

Suppose (X,d)(X, d) is a metric space and φ ⁣:[0,∞)→R\varphi \colon [0,\infty) \to \mathbb{R} is an increasing function such that φ(t)≥0\varphi(t) \geq 0 for all tt and φ(t)=0\varphi(t) = 0 if and only if t=0t = 0. Also suppose φ\varphi is subadditive, that is, φ(s+t)≤φ(s)+φ(t)\varphi(s+t) \leq \varphi(s) + \varphi(t). Show that with d′(x,y):−φ(d(x,y))d'(x,y) \coloneq \varphi\bigl(d(x,y)\bigr), we obtain a new metric space (X,d′)(X, d').
