Problem

We have shown that the PP-VV relationship during a reversible adiabatic process in an ideal gas is governed by the exponent γ\gamma, such that PVγ=const.PV^\gamma = \text{const.} Consider a mixture of two ideal gases, with mole fractions f1f_1 and f2f_2 and respective exponents γ1\gamma_1 and γ2\gamma_2. Show that the effective exponent γ\gamma for the mixture is given by 1γ−1=f1γ1−1+f2γ2−1.\frac{1}{\gamma - 1} = \frac{f_1}{\gamma_1 - 1} + \frac{f_2}{\gamma_2 - 1}.
