Problem

Matrix multiplication interacts nicely with many operations. But not always with transforming a matrix to reduced row-echelon form. Suppose that AA is an m×nm \times n matrix and BB is an n×pn \times p matrix. Let PP be a matrix that is row-equivalent to AA and in reduced row-echelon form, QQ be a matrix that is row-equivalent to BB and in reduced row-echelon form, and let RR be a matrix that is row-equivalent to ABAB and in reduced row-echelon form. Is PQ=RPQ = R? (In other words, with nonstandard notation, is rref(A)rref(B)=rref(AB)\text{rref}(A)\text{rref}(B) = \text{rref}(AB)?) Construct a counterexample to show that, in general, this statement is false. Then find a large class of matrices where if AA and BB are in the class, then the statement is true.
