Problem

Show that there are no retractions r:X→Ar : X \to A in the following cases: ((a)) X=R3X = \mathbb{R}^3 with AA any subspace homeomorphic to S1S^1. ((b)) X=S1×D2X = S^1 \times D^2 with AA its boundary torus S1×S1S^1 \times S^1. ((c)) X=S1×D2X = S^1 \times D^2 and AA the circle shown in the figure. ((d)) X=D2∨D2X = D^2 \vee D^2 with AA its boundary S1∨S1S^1 \vee S^1. ((e)) XX a disk with two points on its boundary identified and AA its boundary S1∨S1S^1 \vee S^1. ((f)) XX the M\"obius band and AA its boundary circle.
