Problem

If XX is a random variable with mean μ≠0\mu \neq 0 and variance σ2\sigma^2, define the relative deviation DD of XX from its mean by D=∣X−μμ∣.D = \left|\frac{X - \mu}{\mu}\right| . (a) Show that P(D≥a)≤σ2/(μ2a2)P(D \geq a) \leq \sigma^2/(\mu^2 a^2). (b) If XX is the random variable of Exercise 1, find an upper bound for P(D≥.2)P(D \geq .2), P(D≥.5)P(D \geq .5), P(D≥.9)P(D \geq .9), and P(D≥2)P(D \geq 2).
