Problem

A mass mm rests on a frictionless horizontal table and is connected to rigid supports via two identical springs each of relaxed length l0l_0 and spring constant kk (see figure). Each spring is stretched to a length ll considerably greater than l0l_0. Horizontal displacements of mm from its equilibrium position are labeled xx (along ABAB) and yy (perpendicular to ABAB). (a) Write down the differential equation of motion (i.e., Newton's law) governing small oscillations in the xx direction. (b) Write down the differential equation of motion governing small oscillations in the yy direction (assume y≪ly \ll l). (c) In terms of ll and l0l_0, calculate the ratio of the periods of oscillation along xx and yy. (d) If at t=0t = 0 the mass mm is released from the point x=y=A0x = y = A_0 with zero velocity, what are its xx and yy coordinates at any later time tt? (e) Draw a picture of the resulting path of mm under the conditions of part (d) if l=9l0/5l = 9l_0/5.
